A Rant and a Nikasil Question for X308 XJ8/XJR Owners Too

I flit back and forth on a daily basis between options for my next car. But I’ve been thinking about X308 XJRs for a couple weeks now, which is strange. I like unusual cars and I’m having a blast tearing around in my Q45. DDing a big V8 sedan suits me. But I think an XJR would be a massive step up from here.

Kinja'd!!!

Slightly less weight and 100 more horespower both sound great. 270 HP/280TQ in a 4100LB vehicle doesn’t really do much for me anymore. Even contemporary V8 X5s are faster than that. I adore the Q and it’s been great so far. But it also has a big list of issues. The car has a weird electrical gremlin that causes starting problems if I don’t micromanage how much electricity I use. It’s a little ridiculous. I have to be careful about how often I operate the windows, sunroof, power sunshade, etc. Especially on short trips. And the A/C doesn’t work, which has been brutal this summer. And it needs new U joints. As well as new suspension; the shocks are all done, especially in the back. Furthermore, the trunk has a massive rust bubble I could probably poke through with my pinky. All things considered, my current car needs thousands put into it before it’s comfortable and no longer a “20 footer.” Realistically it’s more like 40, given how trashed the wheels are on one side too.

My friends hate this side of my approach to car ownership. I barely had my first car for more than a year. I’ve had this one for around a year at this point too. Sometimes, I think my friends get more attached to my cars than I do; they want to see me dump money into customizing something. It’s a touchy subject. It’s as though they view holding on to cars for years as the only way to go about experiencing car culture. The superior way, even.

That’s ridiculous. I crave new driving experiences more than anything else. So I’d rather keep a car stock and put money into the next one, not sink money into cars that I’ll never get back. I don’t need to modify something to enjoy it.

So, a quick question for V8 X308 owners - do you know the full details re: the nikasil cylinder liner issue? I think the deal is that mid 2000s and 2001+ don’t have the liner. But prior models do, and therefore are likely to degrade and suffer catastrophic failure. Next to the timing chain guides, this is the biggest issue brought up on the forums concerning these cars. Just looking for some extra info! Do any USA opponauts have pre 2000 x308 jags? Supposedly the nikasil issue varies depending on the fuel used, so some of them are fine.

I much preferred the 96 XJ6 to the 98 XJ8. I had catastrophic timing chain guide failure and over heating issues. The XJ6 was engine problem free. Other typical issues to expect: sagging headliner, 3rd brake light falling out, faded rear view mirror, pcv valve issues, and a handful of electrical gremlins because British.

For a fairly standard look in to life with an XJ, I give you theme day:

Perfect. Thx! I hear trans issues are a theme with the V8 models too - not the R though I guess, different trans (more robust)

get a gs430. 300hp/325tq, 3,715 lbs

Best build quality on the interior ever, ridiculously crazy reliable, RWD, sound great with an exhaust, actually well balanced if you get stiffer springs.

I thought pretty much all the cars with the issue have had their engines replaced. I know Jaguar did a full recall across the board unlike BMW who had the same issue.

309hp/278tq in a package thats 200 extra pounds though...But if you like the bigger size thats the way to go. I had a gs300 of the older generation and the 2jz in it was smooth and powerful(ish) and was the best built car ive ever owned even at 200k miles.

the suspension is less intensive than a e38, I have to park my 7 for time being. A pothole and blown shocks made my used suspension bits say no more. The jaguars have the 5hp24 problem and chain tensioner but its simpler than the 7. For instance no electronically mapped thermostat the operates the car at 105-116 C (mine is stuck open so it operates around 90-96C) and the shocks aren’t labor intensive. I’ve haven’t driven one but the list of problems on my car make the x308 reliable.

Yeah at the end of the day I’m just not interested in that Generation - and I’m also looking to work my way up the car price/mileage/condition ladder. So it’d be a newer 430, or a 460 if I could hold out for one

LOL the list of problems on your average E38 could make pretty much anything look reliable ;P
